Welcome to The Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign

At The Royal Marsden, we're not afraid of cancer. We learn about it, talk about it and, most of all, use leading-edge techniques to treat it.

The Royal Marsden Hospital is a centre of excellence in cancer treatment and care, and a world leader in research, drug trialling and diagnostics.

The Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign funds the vital projects that enable the hospital to provide a standard of treatment and care that goes above and beyond the provisions of the NHS and to lead the way in pioneering cancer research for the benefit not only of our patients but of cancer patients across the world.

Our Vision-

The Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign exists to support the vision of The Royal Marsden Hospital and is committed ensuring that we stay at the forefront of cancer treatment, care and research. We are doing everything we can to improve our patients’ survival rates – whether it’s new drug therapies or better equipment and facilities, in order to remain at the frontline in the fight against cancer.

Programmes and Activities-

Medical Day Centre Expansion and Refurbishment

A current project that The Royal Marsden Cancer Campaign is funding is the expansion and redesign of our Medical Day Centre in our Chelsea hospital, with the aim of providing better care to more outpatients in a more spacious and relaxing environment.

Recent advances in chemotherapy treatment mean they are less toxic. For the most part, patients undergoing chemotherapy can now be treated as outpatients, so they can sleep in the comfort of their own beds at night.

While this is great news, it also means extra pressure on our Medical Day Centre. We are now seeing 25% more patients than ever before and the space we have simply cannot accommodate everything we need.

The new, expanded Medical Day Centre will allow us to see more patients, install state-of-the-art reclining treatment chairs (some patients will spend as long as 8 hours in a treatment chair, so comfort is vital), introduce a fast-track area for speedier treatments such as Herceptin infusions, and provide new consulting rooms, all combining to make a huge difference to the patients treated in the Centre.

Robot Appeal - completed
One example of a recently completed fundraising project is our Robot Appeal.

At The Royal Marsden, we understand that the prospect of surgery is never pleasant and that patients want to spend as little time as possible in the hospital, preferring to recover at home, surrounded by the people they love.

We aim to make our patient's time in hospital as comfortable and stress-free as possible and with new developments in technology and the help of our supporters, we have been able to do this through the purchase of a fantastic piece of surgical equipment.

As technology advances, the instruments and machines used by surgeons become more and more sophisticated. This allows us to treat more patients and reduce the trauma and stress experienced with open surgery. With the advances in technology, much smaller incisions can be made in order to perform complex surgery. This makes it less traumatic for patients and allows them to return home sooner.

Meet da Vinci
The da Vinci 'S' is the most technologically advanced surgical robotic system in the world and it has revolutionised the way we carry out surgery at The Royal Marsden.

At over six feet high, da Vinci is an impressive looking machine, designed to perform complex operations through smaller incisions. The robot is supporting the further development of minimally invasive surgical techniques at The Royal Marsden, resulting in a quicker recovery and a shorter stay in hospital.

What makes da Vinci truly special is its ability to cut and manipulate tissue in the same way that a surgeon carrying out open surgery would do, but through a tiny hole. Our surgical team is also able to use da Vinci's extended vision, higher magnification and 3D imagery, giving them even greater precision in their work.

Thanks to the generous support we have received from our supporters we have succeeded in our da Vinci Robot appeal and da Vinci has arrived. The state-of-the-art robot is now being used by our surgeons, making a real difference in the surgical treatment of prostate cancer here at The Royal Marsden.
